The atmospheres of extrasolar planets

چکیده
T he discovery was based on an analysis of anomalies in the periodicity of the pulsar radio signal. Three years later, M. Mayor and D. Quéloz reported the first detection of an exoplanet around a solar-type star, 51 Peg. The method used this time was the so-called radial velocity technique, which consists of measuring the velocity of the star around the center of gravity of the star-planet system with high accuracy. This discovery, soon followed by many others, had an immense impact in the scientific community and beyond. While the idea of the plurality of worlds had been in the air for centuries and even THE ATMOSPHERES OF EXTRASOLAR PLANETS

The Atmospheres of Extrasolar Planets
The characteristics of irradiated solar system planetary atmospheres have been studied for decades, consequently modern planetary science benefits from an exhaustive body of groundand spacebased data. The study of extrasolar planetary atmospheres, by contrast, is still in its infancy and currently rests on a few score of datapoints, mostly of the transiting planets. This short survey aims not t...
متن کاملThe Role of Clouds in Brown Dwarf and Extrasolar Giant Planet Atmospheres
Clouds and hazes are important throughout our solar system and in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets. Among the brown dwarfs, clouds control the colors and spectra of the L-dwarfs; the disappearance of clouds helps herald the arrival of the T-dwarfs. The structure and composition of clouds will be among the first remote-sensing results from the direct detection of extr...
متن کاملToroidal Atmospheres around Extrasolar Planets
Jupiter and Saturn have extended, nearly toroidal atmospheres composed of material ejected from their moons or rings. Here we suggest that similar atmospheres must exist around giant extrasolar planets and might be observable in a transit of the parent star. Observation of such an atmosphere would be a marker for the presence of orbiting debris in the form of rings or moons that might otherwise...

Stratospheric heating, condensation, convective transport of non-equilibrium species, and deep radiative energy transport are important processes in the atmospheres of the solar jovian planets. They likely affect the atmospheres of extrasolar giant planets and brown dwarfs as well. Stratospheric temperatures control thermal fluxes in strong molecular bands, and may dramatically affect observed ...
متن کاملUses of Linear Polarization as a Probe of Extrasolar Planet Atmospheres
We point out some advantages of making observations of extrasolar planets in linearly polarized (LP) light. Older cool stars have quite low levels (∼ 10 to 10) of fractional LP, while extrasolar planets can have relatively high fractional LP (∼ 0.1). Observations in LP light can therefore significantly enhance contrast between the planet and its parent star. Data on LP as a function of planetar...
